Medicación cardiovascular potencialmente inapropiada en el adulto mayor

    El aumento de la esperanza de vida va asociado a un mayor consumo de fármacos, lo que conlleva un aumento de efectos adversos. Es conveniente valorar el uso de los medicamentos en los adultos mayores para adecuar la terapia a cada paciente y evitar usar mediación potencialmente inapropiada para ese rango de edad. Para ello hemos revisado dos guías que se han actualizado en 2023 y que establecen unos criterios de manejo de fármacos potencialmente inapropiados para su uso en el área cardiovascular y en la diabetes en mayores de 65 años: los Criterios Beers, de la Sociedad Americana de Geriatría, y los Criterios STOPP/START, de la European Geriatric Medicine.

    The increase in life expectancy is associated with a greater consumption of drugs, which lead to an increase in adverse effects. It is convenient to assess the use of medications in the elderly in order to better adapt the therapy to each patient, avoiding the use of potentially inappropriate mediation for that age range. To do this, we review two guidelines that were updated in 2023 and that establish criteria for the use of potentially inappropriate drugs for use in the cardiovascular area and diabetes in people over 65 years of age: the Beers Criteria, of the American Geriatrics Society, and the STOPP/START Criteria, of the European Geriatric Medicine.
