This paper focuses on the development of the concept of ars in the Late Roman Republic. It analizes the way in which ars expands its meaning from the previous idea of expertise or skill to include the new sense of discipline or study as a result of the contact with the Greek culture. Thus ars designates a set of theoretical rules, organised in a system, that provides a method allowing to put an activity into practise.
