  • Montaigne's Essays are replete with comments about ancient and Renaissance rhetoric. Yet scholars seldom accord him more than footnote attention, perhaps because of his discontinuous way of writing and his skepticism. This article presents some of the views Montaigne held on such topics as ancient rhetoric, Renaissance oratory, standards of criticism, and the “schools of talk.”
