  • Thomas Hart Benton, senator from Missouri from 1820 to 1850, eloquently defended the Union in the late years of his public life. The purpose of this study is to identify Benton's major Union arguments, the conditions under which they were introduced into Missouri, and some of the political implications of the arguments.
