    The National Library of Madrid has a neumed in campo aperto liturgical manuscript, copied in the beginning of the XIIth century, - call-number Madrid, B. N. 288 (Ma 288). As the manuscript is acephalous, its origin and its use are still hypothetical. The office of s. Julian of Le Mans, fol. 175-180, and the vespers antiphon "Urbs provecta" had led scholars to think this manuscript was originating from Le Mans, but Normanno-Sicilian neumes, fol. 188v-192v, then infered this manuscript could have been copied in Norman possessions, either in Southern Italy or in Sicily, (Palermo or Syracuse). However, its notation, quite different from the one used in the diocese of Le Mans during the XIIth - XIIIth centuries and its Saint Mary Magdalene office very distant from the very strong anglo-norman tradition of the sancta Mary Magdalene office, present in all the manuscripts of the region, are two facts which make the Le Mans origin of Ma 288 doubtfull. Moreover, the normanno-sicilian origin of the manuscript is called into question by the fact that the Normanno-sicilian neumes, are present only in the additions and additional chants copied in the last five folios, (the body of the manuscript being composed of one hundred and ninety-three folios). As a matter of fact, the typical French-Norman neumatic notation of this body, its Norman post-pentecostal alleluias (fol. 59-80), together with its particuliar traditional Saint Mary Magdalene office, constitute strong evidence arguing in favour of a Norman origin of Ma 288, more exactly situated in Coutances. Ma 288 could have left Normandy in the luggage of one of the numerous clerics travelling to Southern Italy or to Sicily.

    La Bibliothèque Nationale de Madrid conserve sous la cote 288 (Ma 288) un manuscrit liturgique datant du début du XIIe siècle, neumé in campo aperto. Étant acéphale, son origine et son usage demeurent hypothétiques. La présence, fol. 175-180, de l'office de s. Julien du Mans et de l'antienne de vêpres Urbs Provecta avaient conduit les chercheurs à localiser l'origine de ce manuscrit au Mans, mais l'existence de neumes normanno-siciliens, fol. 188v-192v, a suggéré ensuite qu'il a pu être copié soit dans les possessions normandes de l'Italie du Sud soit en Sicile (Palerme ou Syracuse). Cependant, la notation neumatique du corps du manuscrit, différente de celle qui fut en usage dans le diocèse du Mans à la même époque, ainsi que la tradition de l'office de s. Marie Madeleine, sans aucun point commun avec celle, très ferme, qui se rencontre dans tous les manuscrits de cette région font douter de l'origine mancelle de Ma 288. Par ailleurs, le fait que les neumes normanno-siciliens ne s'adressent qu'aux additions et aux pièces supplémentaires copiées sur les cinq derniers folios du manuscrit qui en comprend cent quatre-vingt-treize, remet en question l'origine normanno-sicilienne du livre. En réalité, le type normand de la notation neumatique du corps du manuscrit, sa liste alléluiatique (fol. 59-80) et la tradition particulière de l'office de s. Marie Madeleine forment un faisceau de preuves qui plaident fortement pour une origine normande de Ma 288, plus précisément pour Coutances. Il aurait quitté la Normandie à l'occasion d'un voyage de l'un des nombreux clercs qui se rendaient régulièrement vers l'Italie du Sud ou la Sicile.
