El presente artículo analiza la trayectoria vital de María Enríquez de Luna, duquesa regente de Gandía en el tránsito del siglo XV al XVI, a partir del análisis de la documentación municipal y señorial y de la bibliografía existente. El examen crítico de las fuentes inéditas y de las publicadas permite cuestionar el carácter autónomo de muchas de las acciones de gobierno que llevó a cabo la duquesa durante su regencia. En realidad, estaban ya presentes durante el ducado de sus espesos, Pere Lluís de Borja, primero, y Joan de Borja después. Ello no implica, para nada, asumir que María Enríquez fue un peón sometido a los designios de Alejandro VI sino situar la acción de gobierno y mecenazgo de la regente en su pertinente contexto histórico.

This article analyses the life of María Enríquez de Luna, Duchess Regent of Gandía in the transition from the 15th to the 16th century, based on the analysis of the municipal and seigniorial documentation and the existing bibliography. The critical examination of the unpublished and published sources allows us to question the novel and autonomous nature of many of the governmental actions carried out by the Duchess during her regency. In fact, they were already present during the duchy of her spouses, first Pedro Luís de Borja and then Joan de Borja. This does not in any way imply that María Enríquez was a pawn at the beck and call of Alexander VI, but rather that the regent's government and patronage was placed in its proper historical context.
