  • This article examines five rhetorical clashes between two Democrats who both sought the presidency of the United States through totally different audiences. Bryan stirred the imagination of the “common people” in the southern and western states, and Underwood appealed to the business and professional man in the South and Northeast. Bryan's rhetorical techniques are revealed as effective against Underwood, but ethically questionable.
