Resumen de Simm's Northern speaking tour in 1856: a tragedy

Merrill Christophersen

  • This essay asks why William Gilmore Simms, the foremost literary figure of the ante helium South, and a fine speaker, could not adapt to the hostile audiences he met on his Northern tour in 1856. And this hostility occurred even though he had been invited to speak by some of the greatest literary men of the North, and to audiences which had been anxious to listen at the start.
