The representation of women in the field of animation goes beyond mere entertainment. It holds significant social importance as it reflects, reproduces, and shapes societal perceptions of gender roles. Through animation, a visual dialogue is established between creators and the audience, providing a platform to examine and challenge the diverse facets of femininity.

From bold and empowered leaders to vulnerable yet resilient women, animation offers a multifaceted lens through which socially constructed and limited perceptions can be defied.

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on portraying female characters who defy stereotypes and embody multifaceted qualities. Devilman Crybaby and Japan Skins are two recent animations that seem to exemplify this shift, presenting female characters who challenge traditional gender norms and demonstrate agency and strength.

Hence, the scientific manuscript presented aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the portrayal of female characters in two contemporary Japanese animations, Devilman Crybaby (2018) and Japan Skins (2020). These animations, created and directed by Masaaki Yuasa, have garnered significant attention and acclaim worldwide. Since their inclusion in Netflix's animation catalog, they have captivated audiences, especially among children and adolescents. Our study delves into the implications of women in animation, exploring the key attributes of female characters and their profound impact on visual storytelling.

To conduct our research, we employed a qualitative non-experimental design, opting for content and multimodal analysis as our chosen methodological approach. This approach allowed us to explore not only the visual aspects of the animations but also the underlying https://doi.org/10.16888/interd.2023.40.3.3 Análisis de la figura femenina en dos animaciones narratives and character dynamics. Through careful examination, we sought to uncover the nuances and complexities of the female characters' portrayals, as well as their impact on the overall storytelling experience.

The findings of our analysis shed light on the remarkable depth and significance of the female characters in both Devilman Crybaby and Japan Skins. The main protagonists and supporting female characters in these series serve as powerful representatives of modern gender roles. They exemplify traits such as leadership, bravery, and resilience, challenging preconceived notions and offering nuanced perspectives on femininity. Their presence enriches the narrative and significantly influences the plot development and the decision-making processes of the male characters.

In Devilman Crybaby, for instance, the character of Miki Makimura stands out as a strong and compassionate female lead. Her unwavering determination and unwavering commitment to her beliefs inspire not only the other characters but also the audience. Similarly, in Japan Skins, the female characters display a remarkable level of agency, actively participating in the story's progression and influencing the decisions of their male counterparts. Through their actions and character arcs, these women become natural leaders within their respective groups, commanding respect, and admiration.

In conclusion, our study on the portrayal of female characters in Devilman Crybaby and Japan Skins sheds light on the profound implications and significance of women in animation. Through a qualitative non-experimental design and the utilization of content and multimodal analysis, we have unraveled the multifaceted nature of these characters and their transformative impact on visual storytelling. By challenging gender norms and embodying qualities such as leadership and resilience, the depiction of female characters in Devilman Crybaby and Japan Skins goes beyond superficial empowerment. It explores the complexities of femininity, highlighting the diverse facets of womanhood.
