Resumen de Las demandas sufragistas en el ensayo de escritoras chilenas de la primera mitad del siglo XX: formas de entrar en el debate político y cultural

Resumen: El artículo examina un corpus de ensayos escritos por Martina Barros, Elvira Santa Cruz, Amanda Labarca y Gabriela Mistral. Además de ser figuras relevantes dentro del proceso de conformación del campo literario y cultural en el Chile de las primeras décadas del siglo XX, estas autoras también reflexionaron, a través de sus “ensayos de género”, en torno al estatus de la mujer y los movimientos/discursos feministas que por entonces emergían. La atención se centrará en un conjunto de textos que publicaron durante el período 1910-1940. Se propone que estos van a contribuir a impulsar, visibilizar y movilizar las demandas por los derechos de las mujeres en el país, y más específicamente, el sufragio femenino. A través de un análisis textual se examinan las diversas posturas a las que adhirieron: ¿qué significaba la obtención de este derecho y cuáles eran sus proyecciones?, ¿hacia qué tipo de movimientos sufragistas estaban mirando las escritoras?, ¿de qué forma apoyaban, se desmarcaban o replanteaban el carácter de los movimientos sufragistas metropolitanos?, ¿a cuáles estrategias debieron apelar para legitimar sus reivindicaciones? El objetivo es mostrar cómo desde el campo cultural y específicamente por medio de un género de ideas como el ensayo, las autoras contribuyeron a repensar el rol y la intervención de la mujer en lo público, así como en el devenir de la nación.

Abstract: This paper examines a corpus of essays written by Martina Barros, Elvira Santa Cruz Ossa, Amanda Labarca and Gabriela Mistral. Besides being relevant figures in the process of shaping the literary and cultural field in Chile in the first decades of the twentieth century, “in their essays on gender themes they also reflected on the status of women and the feminist movements/discourses that were emerging at the time. The focus will be on a corpus of texts they published during 1910-1940. It is proposed that these essays will contribute to promote, make visible and mobilize the demands for women’s rights in the country, and more specifically, women’s suffrage. Through a textual analysis the different positions to which they adhered are examined: What did it mean to obtain this right and what were its projections? To which kind of suffragist movements did women writers look forward? In what way did they support, disassociate themselves of, or rethink the character of the metropolitan suffragist movements?, What strategies did they have to adopt in order to legitimize their demands? The aim is to show how, from the cultural field and particularly through the essay genre, these authors contributed to rethink the role and the intervention of women in the public sphere, as well as in the future of their country.
