Resumen de Experiencias COIL para el desarrollo de habilidades interculturales en la enseñanza de idiomas extranjeros

El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar la percepción del estudiantado de enseñanza del inglés de la Universidad de Costa Rica, Sede de Occidente, sobre la utilización de COIL en intercambios con la Universidad de Shimane, Japón, para el desarrollo de la competencia intercultural. Se utilizó una metodología cualitativa con enfoque descriptivo y un diseño fenomenológico para analizar las experiencias de 21 estudiantes de tercer año de la carrera de Enseñanza del Inglés (11 hombres y 14 mujeres, con edades de 20 a 25 años). Se empleó un cuestionario semiestructurado para reflexionar sobre la experiencia, con respuestas cerradas analizadas según frecuencia y respuestas abiertas codificadas. El estudiantado utilizó estrategias para desarrollar cada uno de los criterios de CCI, destacando, sin embargo, la necesidad de mejorar las habilidades de descubrimiento e interacción para evitar rupturas en la comunicación. El acento y las diferencias lingüísticas durante los intercambios representaron un reto para el estudiantado costarricense.

The Ecuadorian constitution defines this country as intercultural and plurinational. Consequently, universities are by law obliged to incorporate an intercultural perspective. Using a series of in-depth interviews with leading university professors in the fields of genetics, linguistics, psychology and international relations, we determined that, despite the efforts of regulatory entities, higher education institutions in Ecuador are far from systematically incorporating intercultural knowledge in their teaching and research processes. This situation is problematic due to the wide cultural diversity that characterizes this country. In this context, this paper proposes a series of innovation strategies aimed at incorporating intercultural contents in Ecuadorian universities using ethnographic tools. Ethnography is a qualitative research methodology which analyzes social dynamics using participant observation and in-depth interviews. Ethnography is aimed at understanding society from the point of view of the participants themselves (Mantilla, 2021). In recent years, ethnographic techniques have been used in a wide range of disciplines not only within the social sciences and humanities; but also in fields such as medicine, botany or technology. The incorporation of basic notions and ethnographic experiences within the training of university students in various fields potentially allows students to get closer to the cultural complexity existing in Ecuador, strengthening their reflexivity and intercultural dialogue capabilities. Consequently, the incorporation of ethnographic methodologies in the training of students represents a form of innovation capable of contributing to overcoming the existing gaps between Ecuadorian universities and their cultural context, bringing students closer to understanding the complexity of the social fabric that surrounds them.
