This article is the text of an address delivered at the California State Conference in Rhetorical Criticism at Hayward, May 1, 1971. In the spirit of the symposium in an earlier issue of this journal (Winter, 1970) the author views the present state of our criticism and ventures a few suggestions for future emphasis.
