The aim of this paper is to analyse negotiation from the point of view of the ophelimity. Ophelimity means the measure that describes the function of known goods and services in order to satisfy needs and wants. We will use the concept introduced by Pareto in order to emphasise that what the negotiator wants is not always considered advantageous or more useful. Ophelimity differs from utility in its subjective nature. Ophelimity represents utility from the individual’s point of view and not from the community’s point of view. Therefore, two concrete cases are studied in which negotiators try to satisfy individual human wants and needs by means of negotiation strategies. For this reason, the paradox of the stag or hare is studied, where it is shown that it is not always the case that the community interest is more rational than the individual interest, which implies that the actors decide in favour of the former. There are other arguments that play an important role in decision-making. Two cases are studied in which negotiators try to satisfy individual needs by means of negotiation strategies. The identification of these opposing wants and needs is a fundamental requirement when developing an appropriate strategy in negotiation.
