    En este artículo, presentamos una retrospectiva de los progresos realizados en procesamiento del lenguaje natural (PLN) poniendo un foco en los cinco últimos años. Señalamos brevemente que la pragmática seguía siendo un nivel lingüístico inalcanzable por las máquinas… Hasta hace cinco años. Exploramos en particular la reciente capacidad de las máquinas para modelizar el lenguaje humano y aprender a “hablar”, es decir, a comprender y producir locuciones. Intentamos explicar cómo funciona la tecnología de las herramientas más populares del momento (ChatGPT, Midjourney): el transformador y su capacidad para leer documentos para entender y generar textos y conversaciones. Describimos su funcionamiento y su manera revolucionaria de aprender el lenguaje humano (LLM) y de dialogar (IA generativa), así como lo comparamos con las técnicas de PLN más tradicionales. También reflexionamos sobre sus límites, tanto a nivel de capacidad y de sostenibilidad como a niveles éticos y legales, además de destacar los peligros no sólo sociales sino también de seguridad que puede conllevar esta nueva tecnología tan potente

    In this article, we present an overview of the recent advances made in natural language processing (NLP), focusing on the last five years. We briefly point out that pragmatics remained a linguistic level unattainable by machines… Until five years ago. We explore in particular the recent capacity of machines to model human language and learn to “speak”, that is, to understand and produce utterances. We explain how the technology of the most popular tools of the moment (ChatGPT, Midjourney) works: the transformer and its ability to read documents to read and generate texts and conversations. We describe how it works and its revolutionary way of learning human language (LLM) and dialoguing (generative AI), as well as comparing it with more traditional NLP techniques. We also discuss its limits, both at the level of capacity and sustainability as well as at ethical and legal levels, in addition to highlighting the dangers not only social but also security that this powerful new technology can entail.
