Resumen de Los espacios de barrio como facilitadores de la vida social: Estrategias proyectuales de GWL-Terrein (Ámsterdam)

La arquitectura puede afectar significativamente la vida social de un barrio, ya que sus características espaciales y físicas pueden facilitar las interacciones humanas que se dan en él. La configuración espacial de GWL-Terrein (Ámsterdam) ha facilitado una vida social activa durante los últimos veinticinco años. Este artículo indaga en las estrategias de proyecto llevadas a cabo en GWL-Terrein, para generar un soporte espacial adecuado para la vida social. El artículo propone analizar a partir de tres escalas la red de espacios comunes del proyecto que facilita la interacción humana. En una escala cercana, el proyecto fomenta la interrelación entre la vivienda y el espacio común, lo cual posibilita las interacciones humanas a pequeña escala. En una escala intermedia, la red de microbarrios genera proximidad física y funcional entre los residentes, lo cual juega un rol significativo en el desarrollo de las relaciones sociales. En una escala superior, los equipamientos generan pequeñas centralidades que posibilitan las relaciones sociales más multitudinarias y favorecen la vinculación del barrio con la ciudad. La existencia de espacios que posibilitan los contactos pasivos, la proximidad física y funcional entre vecinos/as, y los espacios de barrio adecuados para la interacción a estas tres escalas son determinantes para facilitar la vida social de GWL-Terrein.

Architecture can significantly affect the social life of a neighbourhood, as its spatial and physical characteristics can facilitate the human interactions that take place there. The spatial configuration of GWL-Terrein (Amsterdam) has facilitated an active social life for the last twenty-five years. This article investigates the project strategies implemented at GWL-Terrein, in order to generate an adequate spatial support for social life. The article proposes to analyse on three scales the project's network of common spaces that facilitate human interaction. At a close scale, the project fosters the interrelation between the dwelling and the common space, which enables human interactions on a small scale. At an intermediate scale, the network of micro-neighbourhoods generates physical and functional proximity between residents, which plays a significant role in the development of social relations. At a higher scale, the facilities generate small centralities that enable more crowded social relations and favour the linking of the neighbourhood with the city. The existence of spaces that enable passive contacts, physical and functional proximity between neighbours, and adequate neighbourhood spaces for interaction at these three scales are decisive in facilitating the social life of GWL-Terrein.
