Resumen de Sobre a liberdade: a leitura de “A mãe de um rio”, de Agustina Bessa-Luís

  This essay investigates one of the formulations for the idea of freedom in the work of Agustina Bessa-Luís. As a starting point, we analyze two articles by the writer, included in the collection Alegria do mundo I, in which Agustina makes some observations about the standardization of human behavior and the need for a broader understanding of culture and history. Thereafter, another text is relevant to the argument developed. In “Da condição da mulher”, published in the aforementioned book, the writer makes notes on the roles of women and the meanings of freedom. After reading the texts, we come to the realization that Agustina emphasizes the importance of valuing non- -standard behavior, the relevance of the experience of living relationships, the demand for strength and action and the inevitable dialogue between freedom and responsibility. In order to establish a conversation with the writer’s critical thinking, we read the short story “A Mãe de um rio” (1959), a narrative in which the considerations present in the articles are present too. We also develop the idea of creation as one of the forms of freedom, in addition to other themes that are associated with the relationship between mother and river.

  Este ensaio investiga uma das formulações para a ideia de liberdade na obra de Agustina Bessa-Luís. Como ponto inicial, analisaremos dois artigos da escritora, inseridos na coletânea Alegria do mundo I, em que Agustina fará algumas observações sobre a padronização dos comportamentos humanos e a necessidade de um entendimento mais amplo da cultura e da história. Em seguida, um outro texto é relevante para a argumentação que será desenvolvida. Em “Da condição da mulher”, publicado no livro citado, a escritora fará apontamentos sobre os papéis da mulher e os significados para liberdade. Após a leitura dos textos, percebemos que Agustina ressaltará a importância da valorização do comportamento não padronizado, a relevância da experiência das relações vivas, a exigência de uma força e de uma ação e o diálogo inevitável entre liberdade e responsabilidade. Para estabelecer uma conversa com o pensamento crítico da escritora, faremos uma leitura do conto “A mãe de um rio” (1959), narrativa em que as considerações presentes nos artigos estão também presentes. Desenvolveremos, ainda, a ideia da criação como uma das formas de liberdade, além de outros temas que se associam à relação entre mãe e rio.
