Las salinas de Pinilla (Alcaraz). Luchas de poder y conflictos de gestión entre los siglos XIII y XVI

    Tras un repaso a los antecedentes históricos y jurídicos de la explotación de la sal en el reino castellano, este trabajo plantea el origen de los yacimientos salinos de la zona de Alcaraz, y resuelve la confusión existente sobre el señorío de Pinilla y la propiedad de sus salinas, revelando los cambios que las guerras dinásticas introdujeron en la explotación salinera. Asimismo, se aportan detalles sobre las irregularidades surgidas con relación a su arrendamiento, y se ha profundizado en el papel que la aldea y las salinas de Pinilla tuvieron en la grave crisis financiera que sufrió la ciudad. Los descomunales gastos que tuvo que afrontar su concejo y los continuos pleitos que surgieron en torno a la explotación salinera dañaron inexorablemente las cuentas concejiles. Además, el paso de la sal al monopolio real no hizo más que ahondar en el declive material de la ciudad de Alcaraz. Con ayuda de alguna fuente inédita y la revisión de las ya conocidas más el ejemplo que aportan otros estudios locales sobre diferentes salinas de la Corona de Castilla, hemos podido precisar mejor algunos temas pendientes de solventar por los historiadores y además se han situado en relación con las demás salinas de su comarca.

    After a review of the historical and legal background of the exploitation of salt in the Castilian kingdom, this work raises the origin of the salt deposits in the Alcaraz area, and it clarifies the confusion about the lordship of Pinilla and the ownership of its salt mines, explaining the changes that the dynastic wars introduced in the salt fountain. In addition, some details are provided about the irregularities that have arisen in relation to its lease. Besides, the role that the village and the salt mines of Pinilla had in the serious financial crisis that the city suffered has been studied in depth. The enormous expenses that his council had to face and the continuous lawsuits that arose around the salt extraction inexorably damaged the city accounts. The passage of salt to the royal monopoly only deepened the economic decline of the city of Alcaraz. With the help of some unpublished source and the review of those already known plus the example provided by other local studies on different salt mines in the Crown of Castile, we have been able to better specify some issues unsolved by historians and we have them also situated in relation to the other salt mines in its region.
