At the end of the 15th century, in an environment of great economic development and enormous religiosity in the town an important oligarchy of rich landowners created powerful mechanisms for social advancement, the chaplaincies. And as a means of displaying that power, the desire to acquire religious paintings and images spreads in paralle, with which to decorate their tombs and chapels. Two of them, Bartolomé Sánchez del Abad and his son the bachelor Alonso López ordered the construction of two altarpieces which were later joined in the hermitage of the Madre de Dios, the base of the Convent of San Agustin, where they were repainted and after their confiscation they returned to the parish of Santa Catalina.
