From the point of view of rational choice, war is an enigma. War being costly, there should be a peaceful way of allocating resources between the concerned parties preferable to all since it would eliminate the cost. However, three main causal mechanisms have been identified which can prevent the actors either from identifying a peaceful solution, or from implementing it: informational asymmetries, problems of credible engagement, and problems of agency. Beyond these three mechanisms, the experimental literature has also revealed among human beings a propensity to prefer violence. Notably, in order to impose the respect of norms of justice and fairness, humans may choose to grant war an intrinsic value superior to its cost.

Du point de vue du choix rationnel, la guerre est une énigme. La guerre ayant un coût, il devrait exister une manière pacifique d’allouer les ressources entre les parties prenantes qui soit préférable pour tous, étant donné qu’elle permettrait d’économiser ce coût. Mais trois principaux mécanismes causaux ont été découverts qui peuvent empêcher les acteurs soit d’identifier une solution pacifique, soit de la mettre en œuvre : les asymétries d’information, les problèmes d’engagement crédible et les problèmes d’agence. Au-delà de ces trois mécanismes, la littérature expérimentale a également révélé chez les êtres humains une propension à préférer la violence. Afin de faire respecter des normes de justice et d’équité notamment, les humains peuvent accorder une valeur intrinsèque à la guerre supérieure au coût qu’elle engendre.
