«Guerre civile», une notion insaisissable mais indispensable

    La « guerre civile » demeure un objet difficile à identifier et à cerner parmi les formes de la guerre. En revanche, elle peut devenir un outil conceptuel lorsqu’on entreprend d’en distinguer des éléments constitutifs, que ce soit la transmutation de vengeances et de rancunes communautaires en objectifs politiques, la légitimité donnée à toutes les violences exercées sur des groupes rivaux, l’engagement dans une guerre à mort… Cette approche permet de comprendre comment les jugements portés sur cette notion ont évolué au fil du temps et pourquoi celle-ci a retrouvé une actualité.

    Civil war” remains an object that is difficult to identify and define among the various forms of war. In contrast, it can become a useful conceptual tool when we try to differentiate its constitutive elements, such as the transmutation of communitarian revenge and resentments into political goals, the legitimacy granted to all violent acts against rival groups, the engagement into a war to the finish… Such an approach can help us understand how the judgments made about this notion have evolved with time and why it has become once again topical.
