Desde 2020 se han producido seis golpes de Estado en la región del Sahel. El golpe de Estado en Níger del 26 de julio de 2023 se ha convertido en el séptimo. Un verdadero simún golpista azota a la región sahelo-sahariana. Níger, aliado estratégico de Occidente en la lucha contra los yihadistas en África Central, tiene su régimen democrático anclado en una profunda crisis de carácter poliédrico y de gran alcance. Este golpe plantea mayores preocupaciones internacionales y peligros potencialmente mayores que los anteriores. En gran medida subestimado, el golpe de Estado nigerino no es solo otro golpe de Estado más en África, como algunos preconizan, como si fuera inevitable que, tras los golpes de Mali (en agosto de 2020 y mayo de 2021), Burkina Faso (en enero y septiembre de 2022) y Guinea (en septiembre de 2021) le tuviera que tocar el turno a Níger. Lo que está en juego en el sexto golpe de Estado de los tres últimos años en África occidental no es solo importante para Níger, sino para toda la región del Sahel.

Since 2020, there have been six coups in the Sahel region. Those in Niger on July 26, 2023 is the seventh. A true coup simoon hits the Sahelo-Saharan region. Niger, a strategic ally of the West in the fight against jihadists in Central Africa, has its democratic regime anchored in a deep crisis of a multifaceted and far-reaching nature. This coup raises greater international concerns and potentially greater dangers than before. Largely underestimated, the Nigerien coup is not just another coup in Africa, as some advocate, as if it were inevitable that, after the coups in Mali (August 2020 and May 2021), Burkina Faso (January and September 2022) and Guinea (September 2021), it had to be Niger’s turn. What is at stake in this sixth coup in West Africa in the last three years is not just important for Niger, but also for the entire region and beyond.
