Resumen de “Por los buenos sucesos que se han tenido”: La Virgen de Copacabana en España

  En este artículo trataremos sobre la presencia y devoción a la Virgen de Copacabana en la península. El objetivo es plantear cómo esta patrona fue aclamada y venerada por españoles y americanos, así como destacar el lugar simbólico y cultural que ocupó a mediados del siglo XVII. Nos centraremos en las obras de los frailes Gabriel de León y Andrés de San Nicolás, publicadas en 1663, por ser las fuentes que muestran el nuevo imaginario que empezaba a gestarse en torno a las copias de la vera efigie que se hallaban en España. Al respecto, es elocuente cómo estos religiosos presentan y caracterizan a la Virgen indiana con una nueva identidad transatlántica, en respuesta a los prodigios obrados en distintas ciudades de la monarquía hispánica. Por tanto, dejan manifiesta la devoción ya existente en su época, al mismo tiempo que buscan captar a nuevos grupos de fieles a este lado del Atlántico.

  In this article we shall look at how the influence of Our Lady of Copacabana spread in the peninsula. Our aim is to examine how this patron saint came to be venerated by both the Spanish and Americans and also to highlight the symbolic and cultural significance that she occupied by the 17th century. We will focus on works by friars Gabriel de León and Andrés de San Nicolás, published in 1663, as these are the scources that tell us most about the growing use of imagery associated with icons and likenesses in Spain. In this respect, it is particularly interesing how the religious community bestowed upon this Virgin of South American origin a newer more transatlantic identity in response to the various omens and miracles attributed to her across the Spanish kingdom.

  This provides an insight not only into existing practice and devotion of the period but also into how new devotees were sought and recruited this side of the Atlantic.
