Segundo Eduardo Lourenço, a identidade nacional não é um atributo a priori da existência histórica dos povos, mas um processo – simultaneamente, real e imaginário, sensível e inteligível – que introduz, através de “uma ilusão retrospectiva”, uma certa ordem no “viver real” (epidérmico e fugaz) construindo, desse modo, o passado, que dá sentido e projecto ao presente e substantiva o futuro; por isso mesmo, é uma “ficção necessária” à auto-identificação dos povos, à sua auto-nomeação e autonomização. O sentido dessa identidade tem a sua expressão mais autêntica na Cultura (Kultur/ bildung, Natorp) cujo lugar geométrico é a Língua (mediadora e mediúnica das aventuras espirituais e concretas de um povo). Mas o horizonte da Cultura não se esgota na textualidade linguística, vai para além dela, é englobante (sem ser holista) objectivando-se nas imagens (conjunto de imagens ou Imago) que os portugueses foram fazendo de si mesmos e se encontram, especialmente, nas imagens literárias (heterogéneas à realidade). A identidade nacional, para Lourenço, deve, pois, procurar-se na desconstrução hermenêutica e polissémica dessa imagologia (ou discurso sobre as imagens) cuja genealogia histórica e mitémica convoca.

According to Eduardo Lourenço, national identity is not an a priori attribute of the historical existence of peoples, but a process – simultaneously real and imaginary, sensible and intelligible – which introduces, through a “retrospective illusion”, a certain order in the “real life” (epidermic and fleeting), thus building the past, which gives sense and project to the present and substantiates the future; for this very reason, it is a “necessary fiction” to the self-identification of peoples, to their self-nomination and autonomy. The sense of that identity has its most authentic expression in Culture (Kultur/ Bildung, Natorp), whose locus geometricus is Language (mediator and mediunic in the spiritual and concrete adventures of a people). But the horizon of Culture is not exhausted in the linguistic textuality, it goes beyond it, it is encompassing (without being holistic), objectifying itself in the images (set of images or Imago) that the Portuguese have been making of themselves and that can be found, specially, in the literary images (heterogeneous to reality). Therefore, for Eduardo Lourenço, national identity must be sought in the hermeneutic and polysemic deconstruction of that imagology (or discourse on images), whose historical and mithemic genealogy summons.
