    This paper analyses one important theoretical relationship on the historical studies of urban form. This relationship establishes the connection between regular urban forms and planned urban development and, by contrast, between irregular urban forms and unplanned urban development. Starting from the initial formulation established in the inaugural texts of the history of urbanism, the impact of this dichotomous relationship on morphological research will be examined, as well as the transformations of the last decades, which led to its refute, using for this purpose the methodological, theoretical and conceptual inputs of some studies developed after the second half of the twentieth century.

    Neste artigo analisa-se uma importante relação teórica nos estudos históricos sobre a forma urbana. Trata-se da relação que associa as formas urbanas regulares ao planeamento urbanístico e, pelo contrário, as formas urbanas irregulares à falta de planeamento urbanístico. Partindo da formulação inicial estabelecida nos textos inaugurais de história do urbanismo, procura-se verificar o impacto desta relação dicotómica na construção do conhecimento, para depois alcançar a transformação operada nas últimas décadas, que levou à sua refutação, utilizando para o efeito o contributo metodológico, teórico e conceptual de alguns estudos produzidos desde a segunda metade do século XX.
