Using a Learning Management System to Actively Engage Students in a Biomedically Relevant Introductory Physics Course

    • The use of a learning management system (LMS) is an effective way for teachers to organize, manage, and deliver course materials. Creative activities using multimedia tools make the learning process friendlier for students and increase their interest in the study of sciences.1 A study done by Gunawan et al. addresses how a Moodle-based LMS has been able to increase the creativity of candidate physics teachers.2 However, these learning management systems are underused, especially in face-to-face higher education courses.3 This paper describes how I (the first author) implemented biomedically relevant physics content in introductory physics for the life science (IPLS) courses using my university’s LMS to provide a low-cost, unique, specialized learning experience for my students. Similar to Christensen4 and Stephens,5 my goal is to inspire other educators to embrace technology and effectively use their institutional LMS to build their own courses that fit their teaching style, varied preferences, and learning styles of their students.
