The quarrel which prompted Alcidamas’ writing of On the Writers of Written Discourses as an attack on Isocrates fostered a realistic contribution to speech communication theory which stresses the spontaneous and dynamic nature of extemporaneous oral interaction. Judging from his extant essay, Alcidamas has been unfairly estimated as a rhetorician and offers perennially practical suggestions for effective interpersonal communication.
