    Whether private and with no intention of publishing, or semi-public (knowing that the correspondents will publish them), the letters of writers from the late 19th century and the early 20th century deserve careful reading. They are in many cases representative of a portrait of the time and of an aesthetic thought being developed and evolving; but the self-portrait and the construction of an author figure can be read, in a more or less manifest way, in the letters. We will try to prove it by reading letters from Antero de Quental and António Nobre.

    Tanto privadas e sem intenção de publicar, como semi-públicas (sabendo que os correspondentes as publicarão), as cartas de escritores de finais do século XIX e de inícios do século XX merecem leitura atenta. São em muitos casos representativas de um retrato de época e de um pensamento estético elaborando-se e evoluindo; mas o auto-retrato e a edificação de uma figura de autor lê-se, de modo mais ou menos manifesto, nos epistolários. Trataremos de o comprovar lendo cartas de Antero de Quental e de António Nobre.
