    Ilustraciones, grabados, fotografías, pinturas y esculturas son los soportes más usados en las obras de influyentes exploradores, naturalistas, antropólogos y artistas visuales para describir y representar a los mapuche del territorio de Chile entre los siglos XVIII al XX. A través de ellos identificamos atributos y significados asociados a este pueblo originario y su cultura, así como también el proceso en virtud del cual su imagen gráfica pasó de la identificación ilustrada en el siglo XVIII, a la clasificación racial pretendidamente científica del cambio de siglo entre el XIX y el XX, y de ahí a la valoración costumbrista e indigenista a comienzos del siglo XX.

    Illustrations, engravings, photographs, paintings, and sculptures are the most commonly used media in the works of influential explorers, naturalists, anthropologists, and visual artists to describe and represent the Mapuche people of Chile from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Through these, we identify attributes and meanings associated with this indigenousgroup and their culture, as well as the process through which their graphic imageevolved from enlightenment identification in the 18th century to the supposedly scientific racial classification of the turn of the 19th to 20th century, and then to «costumbrista» and indigenist appreciation in the early 20th century.
