    El maltrato animal representa un importante problema social que afecta a los animales y a las personas. El maltrato animal incluye principalmente maltrato físico (lesiones no accidentales), maltrato psicológico y maltrato sexual. La identificación y la comunicación del maltrato animal es importante, no solo porque los veterinarios están encargados del bienestar animal sino también por las conexiones existentes entre el maltrato animal y la violencia en personas. Los veterinarios que sospechen de maltrato animal necesitan identificar los síntomas clínicos de maltrato y documentar estos casos. Generalmente, las sospechas están compuestas por una combinación de distintos factores que se recogen en los historiales, en el comportamiento de los clientes, en el de otros familiares o en el de los propios animales; y, especialmente, en los tipos de lesiones.

    Animal abuse is an important social issue affecting animals and people. Animal abuse includes, mainly, physical abuse (non accidental injury), emotional abuse and sexual abuse. Recognizing and reporting abuse is important, not only because veterinarians have responsibilities concerning with the welfare of animals, but also due to the links of animal abuse with other types of human violence. Veterinarians having suspicions of animal abuse need to understand how to recognize signs of abuse, and how to document these cases adequately. Generally, suspicions are raised by a combination of factors, such as features in the history of the animals, the behaviour of the clients, of other family members, or of the animal; and in particular, in the type of injury.
