  Negli anni ’20 del ‘600 Filippo IV e il conte-duca d’Olivares decisero di aprire nel Colegio Imperial gesuita di Madrid gli Estudios Reales: intendevano fornire alla nobiltà spagnola un percorso di formazione attraverso cui prepararsi in vista degli incarichi politico-amministrativi previsti dalla Monarquía. Comprendevano insegnamenti quali politica, storia, arte militare, lingue straniere, matematica, astronomia, navigazione e furono subito oggetto di attacco polemico da parte delle altre università spagnole. La ricerca, anche attraverso le vicende biografiche di alcuni docenti che si alternarono sulle cattedre del Colegio Imperial, intende soffermarsi sul confronto politico (affermazione dello spirito nazionalistico,  discussione attorno alla teoria della potestas indirecta in temporalibus del pontefice, restaurazione della monarchia portoghese) che segnò la vita interna dell’istituzione scolastica nei decenni centrali del XVII secolo.

  In the 1620s Philip IV and the Count-Duke of Olivares decided to open the Estudios Reales in the Jesuit Colegio Imperial in Madrid: they intended to provide the Spanish nobility with a training curriculum through which they could prepare themselves for the political-administrative positions provided by the Monarquía. They included such teachings as politics, history, military art, foreign languages, mathematics, astronomy, and were immediately the subject of polemical attack by other Spanish Universities. The research, also through the biographical events of some of the teachers who took turns on the chairs of the Colegio Imperial, intends to dwell on the political confrontation (affirmation of the nationalistic spirit, discussion around the theory of potestas indirecta in temporalibus of the pontiff, restoration of the Portuguese monarchy) that marked the internal life of this educational institution in the central decades of the 17th century.
