    El objetivo de este artículo es reconstruir la labor de investigación y de enseñanza de las disciplinas matemáticas que desempeñó el padre Claudio Richard durante el periodo en que ocupó la cátedra de Matemáticas en el Colegio Imperial de Madrid (1629-1664). A tal fin, se estudian una amplia variedad de fuentes: en primer lugar, los dos tratados que Richard dio a la imprenta, poniendo el foco en la importancia que en ellos el jesuita concedió a las figuras y diagramas matemáticos. En segundo lugar, se analiza parte del amplio corpus de manuscritos sobre matemáticas de Richard, entre los cuales se cuentan algunas de sus lecciones, así como el uso que el jesuita hizo de los instrumentos matemáticos para ejercer su magisterio. De la unión de todas estas facetas – analizando fuentes poco conocidas y aportando nuevos datos inéditos – emerge la figura multidisciplinar del padre Richard.

    The objective of this article is to reconstruct the work in the field of research and teaching of the mathematical disciplines carried out by Father Claudio Richard during the period he held the Chair of Mathematics at the Imperial College in Madrid (1629-1664). To this aim, a wide variety of sources are studied. First, the two printed treatises by Richard, focusing on the importance the Jesuit gave to mathematical figures and diagrams. Second, part of Richard’s extensive corpus of manuscripts on mathematics is analysed by studying some of his lessons, as well as the use that Father Claudio made of mathematical instruments in his teaching. This study synthesizes all these facets – by analysing little-known sources and new data – from which emerges the multifaceted figure and personality of Father Richard.
