    La obra completa de César Vallejo comprende la poesía, el ensayo, la narrativa y el teatro.

    Corresponde a la poesía los valores más altos como actividad intelectual y creativa al punto que prácticamente el nombre del autor se asocia íntimamente a este género, constituyendo el binomio Vallejo -poesía, que relega a segundo plano lo demás. Se requiere un acercamiento mayor a su literatura para identificar sus otras producciones y encontrar los valores propios de cada uno de sus textos.

    Narrar no fue un oficio ajeno a Vallejo. Lo practicó desde los primeros tiempos de escritor. Muestra de ello está en Escalas, conocida como Escalas melografiadas (Lima 1923), cuya cronología fija los momentos de su prisión en la cárcel entre 1920 y 1921 como los de su primera escritura. El mismo año de 1923, meses después de Escalas, publicará en la colección de la novela peruana de Pedro Barrantes Castro, Fabla salvaje; dos obras que dejó antes de partir para Europa.
