Resumen de Fray Alfonso de Mella y el milenarismo espiritual joaquinista en el Señorío de Vizcaya a finales de la Edad Media

En este artículo se analizan los orígenes intelectuales y las tesis doctrinales del líder de los herejes de Durango, fray Alfonso de Mella. En relación a la primera cuestión, se expone someramente el surgimiento y condena de las tesis franciscanas espiritua-les de raíz joaquinista y su posterior asunción por grupos de observantes radicales entre finales del siglo XIV y el primer tercio del siglo XV, como el liderado por fray Felipe de Berbegal, con importantes vínculos con la secta duranguesa. Y en relación a la segunda cuestión, se analizan dos testimonios documentales: la carta que fray Alfonso de Mella remitió al monarca de Castilla, la única fuente directa conservada, y la respuesta a la misma realizada por un anónimo impugnador de su contenido, texto editado por primera vez en 2021. De la confrontación de ambos documentos se comprueba la difusión de esas tesis franciscanas espirituales en el Señorío de Vizcaya entre las décadas de los años 30 y 40 del siglo XV.

This article analyses the intellectual origins and doctrinal theses of the leader of the Durango heretics, brother Alfonso de Mella. In relation to the first question, the emergence and condemnation of the Franciscan spiritual theses of Joaquinist roots and their subsequent assumption by groups of radical observants between the end of the 14th century and the first third of the 15th century, such as the one led by brother Felipe de Berbegal, with important links to the Durango sect, are briefly described. In relation to the second question, two documentary testimonies are analysed: the letter that brother Alfonso de Mella sent to the King of Castile, the only direct sou-rce preserved; and the reply to it by an anonymous challenger of its contents, a text published for the first time in 2021. A comparison of both documents reveals the spread of these Franciscan spiritual theses in the Lordship of Biscay between the 30s and 40s of the 15th century.
