As a young man, Sir Winston Churchill composed an essay on the art of rhetoric and dramatized his ideas by portraying a political rally in a novel. These passages, dreams of oratorical proficiency by a soldier who had not yet approached a rostrum, say nothing about the place of body language. As Churchill came to achieve political and oratorical maturity in the subsequent decades, his delivery was shaped by a halting manner of articulation and an incapacity for spontaneous utterance. The result, a heavy reliance on body language, is clearly depicted in Harold Nicolson's graphic description of Churchill's great wartime orations in Parliament.
