El presente estudio investiga los usos aproximativos de la construcción «estar por + infinitivo» en español peninsular. El significado aproximativo se define a partir de dos compontes fundamentales: proximidad y polaridad, identificados tradicionalmente en ciertos adverbios y locuciones como casi o por poco, que indican cercanía al evento denotado por el predicado sobre el que tienen ámbito, al tiempo que niegan su realización. Nuestro planteamiento analiza el funcionamiento próximo-polar de la construcción «estar por + infinitivo»: gramaticalmente, se relaciona con las perífrasis de inminencia, pero adquiere un valor aproximativo bajo ciertas restricciones enunciativas.

In this article, I explore the approximative properties of the Spanish construction «estar por + infinitive» (roughly similar to English ‘to be about to’ + infinitive). Approximative meaning, traditionally identified in adverbials like almost, is defined as the juncture of two main components: proximity, expressing closeness to the achievement of a predication, and polarity, triggering a negative reading. Syntactically defined as an imminence construction, I attempt to show how «estar por + infinitive» also acquires an approximative meaning under certain uttering constraints.
