The appearance of the copper plate of the True Portrait of Our Lady of the Seven Swords, engraved by Alejandro Carnicero, makes it possible to rectify previous hypotheses and confirm that the original inscription included on the plate was manipulated. This explains the inconsistency between the image represented –the Mother of Sorrows carved by Felipe del Corral for the hermitage of Vera Cruz in Salamanca– and the inscription that identifies her as the Virgin of Sorrows by Juan de Juni. The comparison with two unpublished prints by Gregorio Carnicero raises the possibility that was him the author of that alteration.
