El texto es una versión del ensayo en el catálogo de la muestra Useless: Machines for Dreaming, Thinking, and Seeing. Comisariada por el autor para el Bronx Museum de Nueva York, agrupó máquinas creadas, transformadas o despo¬jadas de sus funciones originales con fines simbólicos, poéticos, estéticos y subjetivos: máquinas como obras de arte. A través de la «inutilidad» de estas máquinas, que contradicen los fines utilitarios inherentes a toda maquinaria, la exposición, como el texto, discute la idea de lo inútil. Este texto glosa numerosos pensadores que la han abordado, de Aristóteles a Peter Bürger, y analiza, en este sentido, las obras exhibidas, muy diversas y creadas por artistas contemporáneos de varios países. Se plantea cómo la «inutilidad» práctica propia del arte actual le permite otro tipo de utilidad: estética, gnoseológica, simbólica, etc. La reflexión reacciona a estos tiempos neoliberales pragmáticos, centrados en el utilitarismo, la productividad y el lucro.

The text is a version of the essay in the exhibition catalog Useless: Machines for Dreaming, Thinking, and Seeing. Curated by the author for the Bronx Museum, New York, it brought together machines created, transformed, or stripped of their original functions for symbolic, poetic, aesthetic, and subjective purpo¬ses: machines as works of art. Through the «uselessness» of these machines, which contradict the utilitarian purposes inherent to all machinery, the exhibi¬tion, like the text, discusses the idea of the useless. The latter glosses numerous thinkers who have addressed it, from Aristotle to Peter Bürger, and analyzes, in this sense, the highly diverse works on display created by contemporary artists from various countries. It considers how the practical «uselessness» typical of current art allows it another type of utility: aesthetic, epistemological, symbo¬lic, etc. The reflection reacts to these pragmatic neoliberal times, focused on utilitarianism, productivity and profit.
