Tomando el diseño ficción como metodología, y a partir de la expresión «un problema totalmente nuevo» que Papanek rescata de la novela de ciencia ficción de Chad Oliver Sombras en el sol, el presente artículo desarrolla la relación del fracaso de Frankenstein con el diseño. Frente a los estereotipos asociados al mito, se incide en la importancia de la responsabilidad del creador de seguir con el problema en vez de abandonar a la criatura, como ocurre en la novela. Como conclusión se subraya la importancia de volver sobre el texto original de Mary Shelley y la importancia de sus múltiples niveles para repensar el diseño del mundo actual, e incide en las posibilidades que nuevas lecturas de textos de ficción abren para una cultura del diseño social.

Taking design fiction as a methodology and based on the expression «a totally new problem» that Papanek rescues from Chad Oliver’s science fiction Shadows on the Sun, this article develops the relationship between Frankenstein’s failure and design and highlights the importance of the creator’s responsibility to continue with the problem. Instead of the stereotypes associated with the myth, the topic of the doctor abandoning the creature is emphasized. In conclusion, the importance of going back to the original text of Mary Shelley and the importance of its multiple levels to rethink the design of today’s world is underlined, and it emphasizes the possibilities that new readings of fictional texts open up for a culture of social design.
