  • Resumen
    • The depth and focal mechanism of the August 3, 1950 Earthquake (latitude = 9,74°N, longitude = 69,83°) which damaged severely El Tocuyo, Guarico and other neighboring cities, were determined. Using the pP - P and sP - P times obtained from Pasadena (PAS) and Tucson (TUC), the focal depth was determined as 18 ± 1 Km. For the focal mechanism determination, we used polarities of the phases P, pP, sP, SH and PP, which were readed from PAS, LPB, TUC, STL and FLA records; P polarities reported by Cagigal, Bogota, Chinchina and Galerazamba; and amplitude ratios pP/sP from a PAS record. The determined nodal planes are a: strike = 206°, dip = 72°and slip angle = -166°; nodal plane b: strike = 112°, dip = 77°and slip angle = -19°. This result indicates that the faulting had a predominantly strike slip component. The surface wave Magnitude Ms was determined from the Rayleigh waves recorded at PAS, TUC and FLA, obtaining a value of 6,3. The focal mechanism obtained in this work was combined, using the P and T dihedra method, with other mechanism reported for Lara state.
