    This article evaluates the impact of the end of the First World War and of the 1919-22 Greek-Turkish war on the wider region of the Near East and Greece itself. It is noted that 1922 marks the definite end of imperil governance and the rise of the nation-state in the Balkans and Turkey. It also marked the end of the Eastern question for the entire region. For Greece, the Asia Minor Disaster brought enormous social horrors, as a ruined and bankrupt country needed to settle huge numbers of refugees. However, Greece accepted the end of its irredentist ambitions (the Megali Idea), it regarded the new borders as permanent, and a new era started, in which Greece aimed to achieve economic development and its entry into Europe and the West.

    Το άρθρο αποτιμά τη σημασία του τέλους του Πρώτου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου και του ελληνοτουρκικού του 1919-22 για την ευρύτερη περιοχή της Εγγύς Ανατολής και για την Ελλάδα. Επισημαίνεται ότι το 1922 σηματοδοτεί το οριστικό τέλος της αυτοκρατορικής διακυβέρνησης και την άνοδο του έθνους-κράτους στα Βαλκάνια και την Τουρκία, καθώς και το τέλος του Ανατολικού ζητήματος για την ευρύτερη περιοχή. Για την Ελλάδα, η Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή επέφερε μεγάλη κοινωνική φρίκη καθώς σε μια χώρα κατεστραμμένη και χρεοκοπημένη συγκεντρώθηκε ένας τεράστιος αριθμός προσφύγων. Παράλληλα όμως, η Ελλάδα αποδέχθηκε το τέλος των αλυτρωτικών της φιλοδοξιών (της Μεγάλης Ιδέας), αποδέχθηκε οριστικά τα σύνορα και ξεκίνησε μια νέα εποχή στην οποία η χώρα θα στόχευε σε οικονομική ανάπτυξη και στην πλήρη ένταξη στην Ευρώπη και στη Δύση.
