The search for new no conventional energy sources, more sustainable and environmentally friendly, is the great challenge of this century and will possibly be also the challenge for the coming ones.
As nearly three quarters of the Earth’s surface is covered by the different seas and oceans, it is sensible to consider that much of the technologies that will be derived from this search will be developed for their use in the maritime environment.
The seas are a hostile environ for the human activity and the Naval Architects, that have experience on designing structures and systems intended for working on these conditions, have the opportunity of putting their knowledge at the service of this challenge.
In this paper we will try to show how the experience on the design of marine elements can contribute to find reliable solutions for structures and systems for the use of these alternative energy sources.
