From 1913 to 1939, Jean Cocteau devoted most of his time to narrative writing. He moved away from the mimetic or realist novel to offer new formal proposals based on his antecedents and drawing on his contemporaries. He constructs a coherent fictional whole around a poetics of the marvellous based on an aesthetic of brevity and surprise. We do not know when the story [Demoiselle Ying-Ning] was written, but an intratextual and intertextual study has shown that it belongs to what Cocteau calls "poésie de roman". Indeed, it contributes to its coherence by its writing, by the cross-cutting themes it deals with, the figure of the double, transvestism and homosexuality, by the supernatural elements it presents and the erotic and humorous tone which surprises the reader. This short story reinforces the role of the poet as a catalyst of the marvellous Eastern and Western, of tradition and the avant-garde.
