Resumen de El evangelio del cura obrero: Justicia social, resignificación y catolicismo en Chile (1960-1990)

Decidieron quitarse la sotana y enfundarse el mono para trabajar en las fábricas y renunciar a la paga del Estado. Son los curas obreros, sacerdotes que sin cobrar por los sacramentos para impartirlos decidieron dejar las parroquias tradicionales para vivir en las áreas industriales, encontrando ahí un espacio para demostrar que hay otras formas de practicar y entender la fe. En este contexto, el presente artículo se propone, a través de un enfoque interdisciplinario, examinar la presencia de los curas obreros en la segunda mitad del siglo XX y su influencia en la adopción y reinterpretación del catolicismo desde los sectores populares. Para lograr este objetivo, se ha realizado un minucioso análisis del contexto histórico en el que operaron, su formación pastoral y su papel en el espacio público. Para ello, se han cotejado diversas fuentes, incluyendo entrevistas, testimonios escritos, material audiovisual, recortes de prensa y análisis de fuentes bibliográficas. De esta manera, junto con el comprender y reconocer a una figura emblemática vinculada al escenario religioso del mundo popular, se explora su relación con los conflictos históricos de la época y su contribución a la comprensión de las dinámicas entre la Iglesia, el Estado y la sociedad.

They decided to take off their cassocks and put on overalls to work in the factories and renounce the State’s pay. They are the worker priests, priests who without charging for the sacraments to impart them decided to leave the traditional parishes to live in the industrial areas, finding there a space to demonstrate that there are other ways of practicing and understanding the faith. In this context, this article proposes, through an interdisciplinary approach, to examine the presence of worker priests in the second half of the twentieth century and their influence on the adoption and reinterpretation of Catholicism from the popular sectors. To achieve this objective, a thorough analysis of the historical context in which they operated, their pastoral formation and their role in the public space has been carried out. To this end, various sources have been collated, including interviews, written testimonies, audiovisual material, press clippings and analysis of bibliographical sources. In this way, together with understanding and recognizing an emblematic figure linked to the religious scenario of the popular world, we explore his relationship with the historical conflicts of the time and his contribution to the understanding of the dynamics between the Church, the State and society.
