Debates transnacionales y panamericanos sobre el turismo. Los casos de Argentina y Chile, 1920-1950

    El objetivo central de este artículo es analizar los debates que se dieron sobre el turismo en distintas instancias de cooperación internacional y panamericana entre 1920 y 1950. Si bien las investigaciones históricas sobre el turismo han tenido un importante auge en algunos países de América Latina, muchas de ellas se centran en una mirada limitada a las fronteras nacionales, sin superar la perspectiva nacional del problema. Los resultados destacan el posicionamiento del turismo como una industria nacional hacia la década de 1920 y 1930, que permitió consolidar los destinos turísticos de algunos países de la región en el mercado mundial de viajeros. También el turismo posibilitó medidas de cooperación entre los países y de coordinación de los esfuerzos por aumentar el volumen de turistas, aunque en términos negativos dichos esfuerzos no avanzaron en estrategias de colaboración e integración regional efectivas en el tiempo. Se abordan como casos de estudio a Chile y Argentina.

    The central objective of this article is to analyze the debates about the tourism in different instances of international and Pan-American cooperation between 1920 and 1950. Although historical research on tourism is booming in some Latin American countries, many of them focus on a limited look at national borders without going beyond the national perspective of the problem. The results highlight the positioning of tourism as a national industry in the 1920s and 1930s, which made it possible to consolidate the tourist destinations of some countries in the region in the travel marketworldwide.Tourism also made possible measures of cooperation between countries and coordination of efforts to increase the number of tourists, although in negative terms, the efforts did not advance effective collaboration and regional integration strategies over time. Chile and Argentina as studied as case studies.
