ABSTRACT: With the basal theoretical substratum of the proposals of William K. Clifford and William James in The Will to Believe. A debate on the ethics of belief, the present philosophical work aims to find the link between faith and science, to know the different definitions that are taken by faith, to point at if there is faith within science and to indicate if the latter is biased by the former. The results show how the contempt and moral veto that some scientists make of faith (e.g., Clifford), is blurred by overflowing with some kind or other of faith; especially which is understood as «trust» or «hope», passing from a propositional faith to an operative one. Finally, the responsibility that philosophy should have as a discipline that can embrace both the faith of science and theism is highlighted.KEYWORDS: faith and science, William K. Clifford, William James, propositional faith, operative faith.
