La nutrición parenteral consiste en administrar nutrientes al organismo por vía extradigestiva, ya sea por vía venosa central o vía venosa periférica, una forma de alimentación que utiliza la circulación sanguínea para introducir los nutrientes, en la calidad y cantidad necesaria para cada individuo.
Sin embargo, es una técnica no exenta de complicaciones, que supone una carga asistencial y un coste económico elevado. Por ello, es importante tener unas indicaciones estrictas para su utilización y valorar los beneficios, riesgos y costes que derivan de ella.
La composición se realizará en función del gasto energético de cada paciente y permite alimentar de manera completa, prácticamente a todo paciente hospitalizado con un tracto digestivo no funcionante, suministrando todos los nutrientes directamente al sistema circulatorio.

Parenteral nutrition consists of administering nutrients to the body through the extradigestive route, either through the central venous route or the peripheral venous route, a form of feeding that uses the blood circulation to introduce the nutrients, in the quality and quantity necessary for each individual.
However, it is a technique that is not exempt from complications, which entails a burden of care and a high financial cost. For this reason, it is important to have strict indications for its use and assess the benefits, risks and costs that derive from it.
The composition will be made according to the energy expenditure of each patient and allows to fully feed practically all hospitalized patients with a non-functioning digestive tract, supplying all the nutrients directly to the circulatory system.
