    La fundació a Elx d’un convent de frares alcantarins en 1561 sota l’advocació de Sant Josep va propiciar la presència a la ciutat d’una comunitat religiosa que en va estendre la influència per tota la comarca. Visqué amb el patrocini dels senyors d’Elx i comptà també amb l’ajuda habitual del Municipi fins a la desamortització de 1835, que en va representar la desaparició. Sobre l’activitat religiosa i humana han quedat molt escassos testimonis en haver desaparegut íntegrament els arxius del convent i el de la província franciscana a la qual pertanyia. Només les cròniques franciscanes editades, alguns documents solts custodiats a l’Arxiu Històric Municipal d’Elx i l’últim llibre de comptes, conservat a l’Arxiu Històric Nacional de Madrid, ens permeten aproximar-nos a la vida quotidiana d’aquest monestir il·licità.

    The establishment of a convent of Alcantara (Discalced) friars in Elx in 1561 dedicated to Saint Joseph (Sant Josep) led to the presence in the city of a religious community that spread its influence throughout the region. They lived with the patronage of the lords of Elx and also had the regular help of the Municipality until it was confiscated in 1835, which led to its disappearance.

    There is very little evidence of religious and human activity as the archives of the convent itself and of the Franciscan province to which it belonged have completely disappeared. Only the published Franciscan chronicles, some odd documents kept in the Municipal Historical Archive of Elx, and the last book of accounts, preserved in the National Historical Archive of Madrid, allow us to approach the daily life of this monastery in Elx.
