The exhibition Unimaginable is centred on two questions: How did early micro-scopic imaging technology emerge? How did it enable the birth of a new scientific discipline—microbiology? The year 2023 marks the 300 anniversary of the death of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632–1723), a merchant turned instrument maker and amateur scientist whose simple microscopes enabled, among other observations, the first view on living cells of algae, microbes in water and bacteria in plaque.
