  • Resumen
    • The nineteenth century was marked by various types of struggle of the individual person or individual nation for identification and recognition. Charles Darwin's theory of the “survival of the fittest” explained this phenomenon from the scientist's viewpoint. The “star system” of the theatrical world is an example of this struggle for supremacy. Characteristic of this theatrical practice were performance “competitions.” This study examines “dance duels” an aspect of these contests rarely considered. The examples are drawn from the center city of the American southern circuit, New Orleans, Louisiana.
