El hábito tabáquico está relacionado con el aumento de morbilidad y mortalidad a nivel mundial. Los efectos negativos del humo del tabaco en la salud, tanto de los fumadores activos como pasivos, no son suficientes para evitar la exposición, principalmente de los más pequeños. Los fumadores pasivos pueden presentar enfermedades debidas al humo del tabaco tanto a corto como a largo plazo, siendo la población pediátrica la que más riesgo de exposición presenta y el hogar la principal fuente de exposición. Está demostrado que los niños expuestos al humo del tabaco tienen más riesgo de sufrir infecciones por el Virus Respiratorio Sincitial, siendo dicho virus el factor de riesgo más frecuente para la aparición de sibilancias y bronquiolitis.

Smoking is related to increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. The negative effects of tobacco smoke on health, both for active and passive smokers, are not enough to prevent exposure, especially among children. Passive smokers can present diseases due to tobacco smoke both in the short and long term, with the pediatric population being the one with the highest risk of exposure and the home being the main source of exposure. It has been shown that children exposed to tobacco smoke have a higher risk of suffering from Respiratory Syncytial Virus infections, this virus being the most frequent risk factor for the appearance of wheezing and bronchiolitis.
